United Airlines and ANA have dropped the price of their flights from Ottawa to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan down to between $618 and $718 CAD roundtrip including taxes!
From Osaka, it's a 26 minute train ride ($17) to the beautiful city of Kyoto if you use the special rapid trains on the JR Kyoto Line.
You can also fly into Tokyo but home from Osaka for the same price. It's also worth trying many other cities in Japan instead of Osaka. See instructions below.
Update 11/2 @ 5:00 PM - It looks like this is over. Some cheap ones are still showing up on Skyscanner but through the slow booking sites (eDreams, Tripair) who may not have their prices updated yet.
Update 11/25 - Flights from Ottawa to Tokyo and Osaka are available again for around $650 CAD roundtrip. Travel dates between January and April, and in September, October.
Update 11/28 @ 7 PM EST - Cheap flights from Ottawa to Tokyo and Osaka are back! This time with United & ANA, and for $539 CAD roundtrip!! Dates in January, February, early March, and April 2020. Start with the Google Flights links below.
You can also look at flying into Tokyo or Osaka, but home from a different airport in Japan.
For example, Ottawa to Tokyo, and then Sapporo (CTS) to Ottawa. The Sapporo Snow Festival is from Jan 30 to Feb 11.
Sapporo (CTS) or Asahikawa (AKJ) are the airports you want to focus on if you're interesting in skiing / snowboarding the legendary powder of Hokkaido.

NOTE: April 29 to May 5 is Japan's 'Golden Week' when everyone in Japan goes on holidays, meaning everything is very busy, booked, etc.
The best time to view cherry blossoms depends on the location in Japan, and varies each year. As a general rule, in many areas it is from late March to early April.
How to find and book this deal
1. Try the following Google Flights search:
Google Flights: Ottawa to Tokyo, Japan
Google Flights: Ottawa to Osaka, Japan
Google Flights: Ottawa to Tokyo, and then Sapporo to Ottawa
- click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and browse for cheap date combinations
- look for the dates that are $539 to $678 CAD roundtrip.
TIP #1: Look for the flights where the overseas legs are operated by ANA instead of United, whenever possible.
TIP #2: Tokyo's Haneda (HND) airport is the one that's close to downtown Tokyo. Narita (NRT) airport is an hour's train ride away.
- NOTE: These don't work when you click through from Google Flights to Expedia (the price jumps). I've had luck with clicking through to other booking sites. You may also want to try searching for the same destination and dates on Flighthub or Kayak
2. Go to Skyscanner or Flighthub
- Search for a flight from Ottawa to Tokyo or Osaka, Japan
- Use the same dates you found on Google Flights

You can also fly into Tokyo but home from Osaka for the same price. It's also worth trying many other cities in Japan instead of Osaka.
1. Try starting with searches like these on Google flights, and play around with the dates.
Google Flights: Ottawa to Tokyo, and then Osaka to Ottawa
Google Flights: Ottawa to Tokyo, and then Tokyo to Osaka, and then Osaka to Ottawa
2. Go to Skyscanner or Flighthub
- Click on the 'Flights' tab
- Change the search type from 'Return' to 'Multi-City'
- Try the same flight itinerary and dates you found on Google Flights. The price will usually be lower on Skyscanner or Flighthub.
